As part of the fifth edition of the AJB DOC
Film Festival, under the auspices of the Info Center of the European Union in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Galeb Nikačević, journalist, host and creator of the
regionally popular Agelast podcast, will hold a masterclass "The
Importance of Storytelling".
The masterclass will be held on September
12 at Cineplexx Sarajevo (cinema No.3) at 18:00. All those interested in attending
this event can pick up invitations free of charge at Cineplexx from September 7
at 12:00.
Focusing on the importance of a documentary
approach to presenting an important story, at this masterclass, among other
things, Nikačević will talk about key elements of a good story, i.e. the way it
is developed from the beginning to the end, the power of a good story, and ways
of preparing for filming, interviewing people and unexpected situations.
"The first thing I would like to talk
about are the three elements of every story - why we tell stories and what is
their value, how to find 'our' story, because many would like to be remembered,
but that is difficult if they have nothing to say - and how to tell the
difference between a good topic and a story. A number of "hidden"
elements and steps in the creation of stories arises from that, and are, in
fact, not visible at first glance or seem insignificant. And dedication to such
details is often the difference between success and failure," says Nikačević.
The Art of Storytelling
When answering the question of what is most
important in telling/transmitting stories and what is the power of a well-told
story, he reminds that it is often said that the history of civilization and
the history of literature are so related that it is very difficult to make a
distinction between these two sciences.
"The oldest evidence of the history of
civilization are also the oldest texts from which we learn the same things and
draw the same conclusions. And each of these elements are, in fact, a story. Therefore,
we can freely say that the history of civilization is the history of telling
different stories. Everything we know about ourselves and the world around us came
from the transferred knowledge, which is in no way different from storytelling.
In fact, we can say that they are synonymous" - says Nikačević.
"Storytelling is a distinctively human
thing on which we have been creating generational progress for as long as we
can remember. Through stories we create identities, beliefs, values and
societies. Stories teach us, guide us and transform us. And the oldest story in
the world is the myth of the quest. Since the beginning, man has been on a
quest. He is on a spatial quest, but also through himself", he added.
Speaking on the topic of the importance of
storytelling, at this masterclass Nikačević will also touch upon his regionally
popular podcast and reveal how he encourages his guests to tell their stories.
"Everything I've learned through the documentary
approach and told (and untold) stories has brought me to the point where I am
now. In conversations, there is a subtle art of storytelling that I learn as I
go, about which I knew nothing when I started, and I think that people will
find value in that," says Nikačević.
